MARISSA LOWERED HER eyes and tried not to laugh. Like she would admit to anything? “I...I don’t know. I saw Jane and just reached for her. I thought maybe Marcus... Is the bastard dead?” She changed the subject nicely.

“Yeah, I got him a couple of weeks after you, ah, well...turned to dust.” Jane’s voice was almost back to normal.

Marissa hugged her. “Thanks, Janie. I knew you would handle him.”

“Jillian Marissa,” Ricardo’s low-voiced warning started his sister talking again.

“Dick don’t pick on me. I’ve just barely come back from the dead. My head hurts, my throat is parched, and I need blood.” She used her tongue to feel her fangs. “Guess I’m still a vamp, huh? Good. Thanks, Bro. I really did not want Marcus to win this fight.”

“Why?” he asked.

Jane asked, “Why what?”

Rissa shrugged her shoulders. “Hell, if I know. Feel any different, Jane?”

Jane frowned. “I don’t know. Now that the pain and skin sensitivity has passed, I guess I do feel a little different. For one thing, my butt doesn’t hurt anymore from the bruises I got when Marcus knocked me on my ass. It’s been hurting for weeks. In fact, I feel pretty good right now. Strong. Very awake. Like I could run for miles down the beach.” As she said this last, she waved her hand at the shoreline and screamed when sparks flew from her fingertips. “What the hell!?”

“Ah. That explains it.” Rissa grinned at her and tried to hide her joy.

Ricardo looked shocked.

“What? What explains it? Why are my fingers shooting fireworks? Is that something that will disappear soon?” Jane looked down in horror at her hands.

“It won’t be going away anytime soon. In fact, it will never go away, you’ll just learn how to control it. Crossing into the ritual circle you pulled the magic into your body and blasted away your mortality. You’re like us now, Jane. This is your first incarnation,” Ricardo said wonderingly. “The initial manifestation of a Druid Mage’s power is the ability to fling fire. And your body has repaired itself. Another sign.”

“I’m a Druid Mage? How? Will I be able to do all sorts of magic? Can I go play with the mermen without having to hold your hand? Does this mean we get to go have more of that magic monkey sex? Like right now!” she demanded. She shifted on the sand.

Marissa knew that Jane’s body had begun to throb in a very insistent manner. Her body was doing the same thing. Anytime magic-infused their bodies when a potential mate was near, a druid mage would have this reaction. It explained what was happening to Jane and Ricardo but didn’t really explain what was happening to Marissa. Why was she so “jazzed” up?

She shrugged off the thought and laughed with her brother at Jane’s excited barrage of questions.

Ricardo stood up and threw his room key near her hip. Then he scooped Jane up in his arms and headed toward her bungalow, murmuring, “Only every day and night for the next twenty or so hundred years, my love.
